Former Blizzard Hearthstone Developers Working On New Marvel Game

Five game developers, who previously worked on Hearthstone at Blizzard and recently formed a new studio called Second Dinner, have announced that they’re currently working on a new Marvel game.

In a video posted on YouTube, Ben Brode and Hamilton Chu revealed that their new studio has raised $30 million investment funds from NetEase, which allows them to expand beyond just their initial five-member team and open an office in Irvine, California.

In the same video, they also surprisingly announced their partnership with Marvel Games, though no additional details or information were given. According to IGN, Marvel Games’ Jay Ong said: “The team they’ve assembled at Second Dinner have made some of the greatest games in history. And now, working with the Marvel Games team and playing in the Marvel Universe… It’s going to be Amazing! Or maybe Spectacular! Or Incredible! Or Mighty! Or quite possibly all of the above!”

Marvel fans would know that those colorful adjectives refer to the Amazing (or Spectacular) Spider-Man, Incredible Hulk, and Mighty Thor, respectively. This could mean that the game will probably feature many Marvel characters, instead of just focusing on one specific hero.

It’s not hard to predict that Second Dinner’s Marvel game will likely be a card game, due to their experience in the same genre (from working on Blizzard’s Hearthstone). Furthermore, most of NetEase’s library of games include online games with free-to-play (F2P) models, which means it’s also likely that Second Dinner’s Marvel game will adopt a similar model.

Second Dinner is currently looking to hire, with two job positions for Client Engineer and Technical Artist open on their website. These job postings reveal that their upcoming Marvel game will be running on the Unity engine just like other games such as mobile game Marvel Future Fight and Hearthstone.
