[Report] Nippon Ichi May Be Going Bankrupt

Here’s a possibly sad piece of news for long-time strategy JRPG fans who love power-levelling: Nippon Ichi may be heading the path of bankruptcy. Yep, you read that right: they’re the folks responsible for Disgaea, Phantom Brave, and a host of weird-ass-but-engrossing RPG titles.

How so, you may ask? According to a ResetEra post (via jin115.com), a Nippon Ichi shareholder report stated that the compensation limit for executives has been increased to five times of what it previously was before. This report coincided with the company’s sharp drop in stock due to the Disgaea mobile project facing internal troubles.

Due to this increase in compensation limit as well as a recent strike warrant to pay employees in the last few months, this is sounding like a company-scale “cut and run” move before it declares bankruptcy. If that is the case, it’s really bad news for folks who love their niche JRPGs and esoteric Japanese titles; Nippon Ichi and its American branch usually do the Lord’s work in importing and localizing these titles for all to play.

Until it’s official from the Laharl-enslaved horse’s mouth, fans should steel themselves for the worst. The last game Nippon Ichi developed and published in English was Lapis x Labyrinth.
