GTA V Is The UK’s Best-Selling Game Of The Decade

As we finally enter 2020, everyone is looking back at the past decade. Video game industry analysts go over the best-selling games of the decade and in the UK, Rockstar still comes out on top.
According to a recent report by GameCentral, Grand Theft Auto 5 has been revealed to be the number one best-selling video game of the 2010s. It was first released in 2013 and became the UK’s best-selling game of all time a year later, selling more than 2.25 million copies five days after release.
Coming in at second place is Call of Duty: Black Ops which was released in 2010. Within its first five days, the game sold more than 2 million copies. At one point, it was the best-selling game of all time in the UK before GTA 5 took its place.
Here’s a full ranking of the top 10 best-selling video games of the 2010s in the UK (retail only):
- Grand Theft Auto 5
- Call of Duty: Black Ops
- Minecraft
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
- FIFA 14
- FIFA 13
- FIFA 15
- Call of Duty: Black Ops 2
- FIFA 11
- FIFA 12
GTA and COD may appear to be the champion of the rankings but the FIFA franchise is the true king of the UK video games market. Seeing as how football is the country’s biggest sport, it shouldn’t come off as a surprise to anyone.
One reason why FIFA 14 appears to be the best-selling FIFA game in the last decade is because the data only includes retail sales. If digital sales were accounted for, there’s a chance that newer FIFA games would make it into the list.
Just look at the success of FIFA 20 in the UK. It’s the UK’s number one best-selling game of 2019 with more than 1.5 million copies sold (retail only). In that same list, the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare reboot comes at second place followed by Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
Here are the top 10 best-selling video games of 2019 in the UK (retail only):
- FIFA 20
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare
- Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
- Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order
- Red Dead Redemption 2
- FIFA 19
- Pokemon Sword
- Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled
- Grand Theft Auto 5
- The Division 2
All in all, it’s not all that surprising. The numbers seem to reflect each game’s success in other countries except for the US. Over there, there’s not much love for football (they call it soccer) and people are crazier about their NBAs, NFLs, and MLBs.
