Warner Bros. Delays Tenet & Wonder Woman 1984… Again

There’s more bad news for movie fans, as the COVID-19 pandemic strikes again. Warner Bros. has announced that they have delayed Christopher Nolan’s Tenet and the upcoming Wonder Woman 1984.

Tenet will now premiere on 31 July 2020 (instead of 17 July 2020), while Wonder Woman 1984 has been pushed back several months to 2 October 2020 (from its most recent release date of 14 August 2020).

In a statement to Variety, Warner Bros. Pictures Group chairman Toby Emmerich said:

“We’re especially thrilled, in this complex and rapidly changing environment, to be bringing Christopher Nolan’s ‘Tenet,’ a global tentpole of jaw-dropping size, scope and scale, to theaters around the world on July 31.

It’s been longer than any of us could’ve imagined since we’ve seen a movie on the big screen, and to acknowledge Chris’ fans as we count down to ‘Tenet’’s” opening day, we are also excited to offer his masterpiece ‘Inception’ in theaters for its 10th anniversary on July 17.”

Although cinemas in the United States and other countries have started to reopen amidst the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, studios can’t plan for consumer behaviour beforehand. Would audiences still flock to movie theatres and cinemas even with proper social distancing SOPs in place? The answer is likely a no for a lot of people, which means less revenue for movie studios.
