Call Of Duty Franchise Surpasses $3 Billion In Record-Breaking Year

According to Activision, the Call Of Duty franchise has just experienced a record-breaking year in 2020, especially thanks to Call Of Duty Warzone and Call Of Duty Black Ops Cold War, as well as a new shared ecosystem business model.

After the launch of Call Of Duty Black Ops Cold War, the franchise has officially surpassed over US$3 billion in net bookings over the last 12 months.

The US$3 billion comes from the net amount of products and services sold digitally or sold-in physically in the period and includes license fees, merchandise, and publisher incentives, among others.

Here are some of the vital statistics, according to the press release:

  • More than 200 million people played Call Of Duty games in 2020.
  • Bookings up 80 percent year-on-year.
  • Units sold up 40 percent year-on-year.
  • Call Of Duty Warzone now has over 85 million players.
  • Highest number of players in recorded history in 2020.
  • Biggest November ever for monthly players and hours played.

The publisher also confirmed that additional free post-release content for all Call Of Duty Black Ops Cold War players is on the way, with Season One set to debut this month.

Activision Call Of Duty Executive Vice President and General Manager Byron Beede said:

“The momentum over the last year across the Call of Duty ecosystem from free-to-play Warzone as well as post-launch support of Modern Warfare, and now to Black Ops Cold War has been incredible.

This is the next great chapter in Black Ops with an amazing campaign, an all-new zombies experience and of course, high-octane multiplayer.

Launch is only the beginning.

We are focused on building a continuous pipeline featuring a tremendous amount of free, post-launch content and events across the franchise.”

Call Of Duty Black Ops Cold War is available now worldwide on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and PC.
