Sub-Zero Knocks Out Tanjiro At The US Box Office
The new Mortal Kombat movie has come out on top at the domestic US box office in its opening weekend. It’s a surprise, considering that the highly-anticipated Demon Slayer Mugen Train movie also came out at the same time. This is despite the fact that the Demon Slayer movie managed to break the record for a foreign-language film’s opening weekend with a whopping US$19.5 million.
Meanwhile, the Mortal Kombat movie is at the top of the chart with US$22.5 million (via Variety), which is actually the second-best post-COVID opening weekend yet after Godzilla Vs Kong‘s US$31 million debut last month. Speaking of that movie, it has already crossed US$400 million in worldwide box office revenue as of this weekend with a total of US$406.6 million to date.
This bodes well for the US cinema industry as a whole, as only 55 percent of theatres have reopened in the country. In the meantime, you can check out my spoiler-free review of the Mortal Kombat 2021 movie here, or head on over here for our spoiler-filled breakdown of the movie (if you’ve already watched it).
