[Report] Tencent Made Controversial Demands In A Movie They Were Producing (Update)
By Alleef Ashaari|January 25, 2022|0 Comment
(Updated on 26 January 2022):
Tencent reached out to us and gave the following official statement:
The views attributed to Tencent by Alanah Pearce are contrary to our beliefs, culture and values. At this point they are also just rumors. But we do take the matter seriously, and if it turns out someone affiliated with Tencent did in fact make such a statement we will take appropriate action.
China-based Tencent is currently one of the largest game publishers in the world. It doesn’t really put them in a good light when they allegedly wanted “no Black people” and “bigger tits” in a movie that they were producing.
All this was revealed when former games journalist and current Sony Santa Monica writer Alanah Pearce spilt the beans during an interview with The Serfs on Twitch. When asked about Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard, she said that a lot of people aren’t aware of how problematic the environment is at Tencent.
She started by claiming that Tencent reportedly buys studios to replicate and steal their code for games, or forcing studios to give away their “source code”. She then continued by saying that she had a friend that told her about some of the other issues at the company.
She said:
“I have a friend who had a film that was offered to be made by Tencent — or funded by Tencent — and they were like ‘no black people’ and ‘bigger tits.’ Like, a lot of rules that they have that I think also have had a hand in you know, some AAA games.â€
However, to avoid getting sued by Tencent, Alanah refrained from mentioning any specific movies or games. It’s hard to speculate what movie or games she’s actually talking about because Tencent owns a lot of studios and companies. However, recently Tencent Pictures was involved in movies like Top Gun Maverick, Moonfall, Venom Let There Be Carnage, and Monster Hunter, to mention a few.
Could it have been one of those? Perhaps we’ll never know. We’ll have to take what Alanah said with a grain of salt, considering that she heard all of this from a friend, so we have no verified source to confirm the allegations.
According to @Charalanahzard, "Tencent wanted no black people and bigger breasts in a movie they wanted to fund" wow pic.twitter.com/tEkjiG6FaG
