Embracer Group Shuts Down Onoma, Former Square Enix Montreal Studios
After only a month since what was previously the Square Enix Montreal studio, Onoma has been shut down by Embracer Group. According to a report by Bloomberg, Embracer Group informed employees today that several members of the staff will be transferred to Eidos Montreal.
Square Enix Montreal is best known for developing mobile games like Hitman Go, before they were acquired by Embrace Group in May 2022 and rebranded to Onoma on 10 October 2022, which is less than a month ago from today (2 November 2022). No reason has been given for the shutdown at the time of writing.
According to the same sources, the shutdown is due to a cost-cutting initiative, which also allegedly includes Eidos Montreal reducing the scope of one unannounced project and cancelling another unannounced project. Eidos Montreal is currently working on a new IP (recently rescoped), a new Deus Ex (in very early development) and co-development partnerships with Xbox (which includes the new Fable).
