Yuji Naka Re-Arrested For Final Fantasy VII Battle Royale Insider Trading

One of the fathers of Sonic The Hedgehog sure cannot catch a break.

Yuji Naka, known for being a lead programmer for the classic Sonic The Hedgehog games, has been arrested again due to alleged insider trading. This time, the game in question involving the scheme is Final Fantasy VII: The First Soldier, a battle royale mobile game featuring SOLDIERs from the FFVII universe.

According to a news report from Asahi, the developer was arrested for allegedly investing in ATeam Entertainment based on non-public knowledge of Square Enix’s future FFVII plans. Naka would then purchase around US$834,000 worth of shares from ATeam. The last time he was arrested for this was for buying shares of Aiming over their upcoming game Dragon Quest Tact. During his time at Square Enix making Balan Wonderworld, he allegedly bought 10,000 shares of Aiming stock for about US$20,000.

Square Enix has yet to comment on this, though they did make a statement during the Dragon Quest Tact insider trading fiasco.

“Today, some media outlets reported that the former employees of Square Enix were under investigation for suspected insider trading.

We have been fully cooperating with requests from the Securities and Exchange Surveillance Commission. As the investigation by the Tokyo District Public Prosecutors Office is underway, we will continue to fully cooperate with the investigation.

We deeply regret the great concern this has caused to all concerned. We have dealt with this incident strictly, including internal disciplinary actions taken against the suspected employees.”
