#1. Elden Ring (PS5, Xbox Series X | S, PS4, Xbox One, PC)

As I’m sure it’s no surprise to anyone, Elden Ring makes the top of our list. By now, you already know what this game is about and what makes it so great. But to us, it’s so much more.

In Elden Ring, exploration is a key aspect of the game. It is an RPG that emphasizes role-playing to the point where the player feels like they are a stranger in a strange land, just like their avatar. The game provides basic controls and some mechanics in the tutorial but does not offer a quest log, a mini-map with icons, or on-screen overlays to guide the player.

Instead, the player must learn about the game by decoding oblique item descriptions within the game or by seeking information from online communities. Death is not necessarily something to be avoided, but rather a necessary step on the path to understanding the game. This may seem intimidating at first, but the experience of making progress in Elden Ring is ultimately rewarding because it feels earned. Like a true Souls game should.
