Overwatch 2 Celebrates Pride Month
By Xandria Morden|May 31, 2023|0 Comment
Overwatch 2 is introducing a Pride event to celebrate diversity and inclusivity for the month of June. The game aims to create a world where everyone feels seen and celebrated. The development team wants players to connect with the game’s heroes and see themselves in the Overwatch universe which is why it was important for them to focus on inclusivity. The event will include Pride-themed cosmetics such as Player Icons and Name Cards, representing diverse identities. We’ve got a rainbow of cards ready for this Pride event! Tracer’s got a lesbian card, Soldier: 76 is rocking the gay card, Lifeweaver brings the pansexual vibes with their card, and Baptiste and Pharah are proudly sporting the bisexual and lesbian cards, respectively. Finally, the speculation about Baptiste and Pharah’s orientations can be put to rest! The Overwatch team has also released a a new short story that delves into the the player’s identities, their connection, and their journey of self-discovery. It’s a celebration of diversity and love, and honestly I am excited for everyone to dive in.
Watchpoint: Gibraltar will also see the addition of a new photo in the barracks of Tracer and her partner Emily (this is also included as a new spray that can be equipped for Tracer). There will be an updated Midtown map taking place shortly after a fantastic Pride parade in the whole month of June. The Overwatch team plans to further explore character identities and relationships in the game’s lore as they continue to work on the game. Additionally, Blizzard will donate proceeds from Pride-themed merchandise sales to the National Center for Transgender Equality, supporting the LGBTQ+ community. The goal is to create a welcoming and accepting environment for all players.
Starting from June 1, all Overwatch 2 players will receive the Pride-themed cosmetics automatically, and this will apply to future accounts as well. A special thanks goes to Daniel Quasar for collaborating with the team and helping to incorporate the Progress Pride Flag into the game.
