Donald Glover Joins The Community Movie But Another Cast Member Is Not Returning

Last year, it was confirmed that the long-awaited Community movie is officially happening. However, the only confirmed cast members back then were Joel McHale, Danny Pudi, Alison Brie, Gillian Jacobs, Jim Rash, and Ken Jeong reprising their roles as Jeff, Abed, Annie, Britta, Dean Craig Pelton, and Ben Chang.

However, In an interview with Kelly Ripa’s Let’s Talk Off Camera podcast (via EW), Joel McHale himself has confirmed that Donal Glover will also be returning and reprising his role as Troy.

He said:

“Donald’s coming back and that’s really important. The fact that Donald’s gonna do it, that was the big piece. But I think everyone’s coming back. I mean, so far we’re pretty good. And I think that will happen. If not then, you know, Donald will be there.”

McHale also re-confirmed that Chevy Chase, who played Pierce Hawthorne, won’t be returning in the Community movie.

He added:

Yeah, I don’t think so. There wasn’t any issues at all when we were making the show (sarcastically).”

Community originally aired for six seasons from 2009 to 2015. The series followed a study group at a fictional community college in Greendale, Colorado, which consisted of Joel McHale’s Jeff Winger, Chevy Chase as Pierce Hawthorne, Gillian Jacobs as Britta Perry, Danny Pudi as Abed Nadir, Yvette Nicole Brown as Shirley Bennett, Brie as Annie Edison and Donald Glover as Troy Barnes. Ken Jeong portrayed Ben Chang, who appeared in a variety of roles from Spanish professor to fellow student. The series also featured Jim Rash as Greendale’s dean, Craig Pelton.

Why made Community so great? It’s about a diverse ensemble cast of characters in a community college setting, but that’s not what makes it unique. The single best thing about Community was the concept episodes, where the series would divert from its basic sitcom trope setting for special episodes that focused on brilliant gimmicks and premises.

These include iconic paintball episodes, meta episodes, special Halloween and Christmas episodes, the darkest timeline concept, a satirical take on documentaries and a whole lot more.

All six seasons of Community are currently streaming on Netflix.
