What You Need To Know Before Starting Remnant 2

Remnant 2, the long-awaited sequel to Remnant From The Ashes is almost here! The game is published by Gearbox Software and developed by Gunfire Games; you enter a procedurally-generated level and shoot up monsters in a three-person party (or solo). And since it’s following the Dark Souls-like method of gameplay, your checkpoints are near-nonexistant and you’ll face really tough bosses.

Here’s what you need to know about the upcoming third-person action RPG.

What’s Different?

Remnant 2 encourages exploration, experimentation, and a sense of mystery and wonder as you progress through the game. There will be new worlds for players to explore! New mythical creatures to see and new deadly bosses to defeat as you try to survive. There are multiple weapons and items for players to utilize and upgrade discovered items to take on tougher challenges. With streamlined quest lines, augments, crafting, and loot rewards in procedurally generated dungeons and areas, we hope to see more replayability that will challenge even the expert players.

In Remnant from the Ashes, the one thing that irked me was that Archetypes did not matter at all. The developers received feedback from many players arguing that they wanted Archetypes to have more significance beyond just their starting loadout in the game. Thus, designing a system that aligns with the core principles of Remnant: collecting everything is still possible, effort is rewarded, and the journey remains full of mystery and wonder. To achieve this, Remnant 2 ensures that players aren’t locked into their starting choice, and are offered special rewards for those who put in extra effort.

Each new Archetype Perk and Skill unlock is meant to inspire new build ideas. When you acquire a new element for your Archetype, it should prompt you to think about all the other gear you’ve collected so far and explore exciting combinations that are now possible.

Archetype Breakdown

In Remnant 2, your starting choice matters! Each Archetype comes with a custom gear loadout, including unique armour, three distinct weapons, and a signature Archetype Trait. There are also two exciting new additions: Archetype Perks and Archetype Skills. As you gain experience and level up the Archetype you’ve picked, you will unlock these special features, making the progression unique to each Archetype.

Archetype Perks

There are 5 Perk Types: Prime, Damage, Team, Utility, and Relic.

  1. Prime Perk: This is the unique core perk of each Archetype that provides a special benefit that cannot be found in other Archetypes or items.
  2. Damage Perk: This perk increases the damage output of your character as you level up the Archetype. Different Archetypes may receive various damage buffs, such as Ranged and Melee damage, Mod Power boost, or even Skill Damage enhancement.
  3. Team Perk: It’s all in the name. The Team Perk benefits all allies, whether you play solo or in a group. Examples include increased ammo drops, shared healing, or improved team defense. These perks add a little extra boost to your gameplay and help your team in cooperative scenarios.
  4. Utility Perk: This is a “Quality of Life” perk, providing a small buff that complements the Archetype’s gameplay. For instance, if an Archetype relies on Sprinting and Evading, their Utility Perk might reduce Stamina costs, making it easier to perform these actions.
  5. Relic Perk: This perk provides a temporary buff that activates for a short time after using a Relic (Dragon Heart). These perks vary based on the Archetype; damage-oriented Archetypes receive damage-based buffs, while support-oriented ones receive support-based buffs. Remember that using a Relic not only grants you a boost but also acts as your primary healing source.

Archetype Skills

So from what we know, Archetype Skills are unique abilities that can only be used by a specific Archetype. Unlike Weapon Mods, which can be shared between Weapons, Archetype Skills are exclusive to their respective Archetypes. They offer powerful buffs, auras, damage, and healing, but they have a cooldown limitation, unlike Weapon Mods that require building up Mod Power.

Each Archetype has three different Archetype Skills to choose from, but you can only equip one at a time. However, you can freely switch between unlocked Skills outside of combat at no cost. So, you have the flexibility to choose the best Skill for a particular situation, be it defensive or offensive. And don’t worry, Weapon Mods are still available alongside these Archetype Skills!

Archetype Trait

In Remnant 2, you will find that each Archetype has its own Trait, which is locked exclusively to that Archetype. As you level up your Archetype, you automatically gain +1 to that Trait without spending any points. This becomes crucial because there’s a limit to the total Trait Points you can have, meaning you can’t max out every Trait (Yes, I know, truly depressing). You’ll have to make decisions on which Traits to invest in and which ones to leave behind.

Once you reach the maximum level with your Archetype, the Archetype Trait becomes unlocked and can be used in any build you desire. However, if you use it in a build that doesn’t belong to the original Archetype, you’ll need to spend your Trait Points on it. So, you can freely utilize a fully maxed out Archetype Trait on other characters, but it comes at a cost, and each Archetype still retains its unique Trait.

Don’t worry, you will not be stuck with your starting Archetype if you end up not enjoying it. Your initial choice only sets your playstyle at the beginning. Just like you can change Weapons, Armour, Mods, and Rings, you can also switch your Archetype. However, to do that, you’ll need to earn the new Archetype by unlocking it during gameplay.

You can still unlock all the other Starting Archetypes and you don’t have to start a new game to use them; as soon as you unlock a new one, you can switch to it right away. For example, you could have your starting Archetype at Level 7, discover a new one, and then immediately switch to it. Keep in mind that you’ll still need to level up the new Archetype to enjoy its Perks, Skills, and Archetype Trait, but the choice is yours to make.

There are various ways to unlock Archetypes, and the developers have mentioned they will let the community discover that for themselves.

Double Trouble

Dual Archetypes. Yes, DUAL.

Now Dual Archetypes are a game-changing element in Remnant 2. Eventually, you’ll unlock the ability to combine any two Archetypes into a “Class.” This Class will have all the Perks, Skills, and Traits from both Archetypes. The Archetype in the Prime Slot activates its Prime Perk, enhancing its Skills. The other Archetype doesn’t have access to its Prime Perk but still contributes its Skills.

For example, combining a DPS Archetype with a Support Archetype will create a unique Class with enhanced DPS capabilities. Swapping their positions will result in a Class with improved support abilities. Each Dual Archetype Class has its own name, with the Prime Perk of the first Archetype as a prefix. This system allows you to easily identify the primary focus of each Class while still recognizing the individual Archetypes. It’s a feature designed to add depth and excitement to your gameplay.

Remnant 2 Release Date

The Remnant 2 release date is Tuesday, 25 July, 2023, for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC at 9 am PT, 12 pm ET, 5 pm BST. However, the game has an early access release date of Friday, 21 July, 2023, at 4:30 pm PT, 7:30 pm ET, 12:30 am BST (22nd), for those who have purchased the Ultimate Edition.
