James Gunn has added yet another DC Comics superhero to his upcoming Superman Legacy movie. Anthony Carrigan has been cast as archaeologist Rex Mason AKA Metamorpho (via The Hollywood Reporter).

Just yesterday, several cast additions were announced, including Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific and Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner Green Lantern.

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Carrigan said:

“I like comic books, but I’m not a diehard, but I did when all my hair fell out, go through the kind of pantheon of all of these bald superheroes and supervillains and made note of all of them. I remember seeing Metamorpho and I think he had like a giant like hammer for a hand and I was like, that guy’s badass. Noted. We’ll store that one away.

This character from what I’ve learned of the source material, he didn’t like the way he looked, and I can really relate to that. You know, when he got his powers he thought it was a curse. That’s something that I really felt as well. In my case, I turned it around and saw it as a blessing. So I’m excited to bring that to the table with this character.”

Metamorpho, created by Bob Haney and Ramona Fradon in 1965, can transmute elements in his body into various forms, taking those properties on as powers. After first being an archaeologist, his abilities set him on the path of heroism. He later became a detective and a founding member of the supergroup known as the Outsiders.

Carrigan is no stranger to DC characters, having previously played Kyle Nimbus AKA Mist in CW’s The Flash series and Batman villain Victor Zsasz in the Gotham series.

James Gunn, who will direct the 2025 movie, has previously already cast David Corenswet as Clark Kent and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane. The movie will start shooting in January 2024.

Superman Legacy is slated to premiere on 11 July 2025.

According to Warner Bros’ official logline, Superman Legacy tells the story of Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.
