Ahsoka Boss Reveals He’s Been Working On A Live-Action Series Since Before The Mandalorian

We’re less than a month away from the premiere of the Star Wars Ahsoka series on Disney+ Hotstar on 23 August 2023. During a 2022 interview from when Ahsoka was still in production (which is before the currently-ongoing WGA strike), Star Wars franchise maestro and Ahsoka showrunner Dave Filoni revealed that he had been working on a live-action Ahsoka for a long time. So long, in fact, that he’s been planning this from before The Mandalorian premiered back in 2019.

Dave Filoni said:

Ahsoka made her live action debut in Episode 13 of “The Mandalorian.” I had been developing a live-action Ahsoka project before “The Mandalorian” began when I was still working on “Rebels.” The next installment of the character had always been on my mind, and I wanted to do it in live action.

In the same interview, Filoni also clarified that even though Ahsoka will continue the story of Ahsoka Tano from her animated start, viewers won’t need to watch the seven seasons of Star Wars The Clone Wars to enjoy Ahsoka.

He added:

It’s a continuation, but you don’t need to have seen “The Clone Wars” to enjoy the story. Hopefully, if I’ve done my job well, this story is clear, and you relate to the characters and their relationships. There’ll be things that will surprise the audience about Sabine and Ahsoka’s relationship that they don’t know and that you won’t see anywhere in any story prior to this.

announced a proper release date for the upcoming Star Wars series, Ahsoka, which will now premiere on 23 August 2023.

Set after the fall of the Empire, Ahsoka follows the former Jedi Knight Ahsoka Tano as she investigates an emerging threat to a vulnerable galaxy.

In addition to Rosario Dawson in the title role, “Ahsoka” stars Natasha Liu Bordizzo as Sabine Wren, Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Hera Syndulla, Ray Stevenson as Baylan Skoll, Ivanna Sakhno as Shin Hati, Diana Lee Inosanto as Morgan Elsbeth, David Tennant as Huyang, Lars Mikkelsen as Grand Admiral Thrawn and Eman Esfandi appearing as Ezra Bridger.

The series is written by Dave Filoni, who executive produces alongside Jon Favreau, Kathleen Kennedy, Colin Wilson, and Carrie Beck. Karen Gilchrist is co-executive producer.

The first two episodes of Ahsoka will premiere on Disney+ Hotstar on 23 August 2023.
