Stray Animated Movie Is In The Works With Ice Age Director

Annapurna Animation, a division of Annapurna Pictures is ready to launch its next phase of movies following the success of its debut feature, Nimona on Netflix. Chris Wedge, the director of Ice Age, and the co-director of Nimona have partnered to develop an animated adaptation of Stray.

The company plans to adapt several titles under Annapurna Interactive, but Stray is the only one that has been announced thus far.

No official synopsis has been released for Stray, but the movie is expected to be based on the video game’s events. Stray is a third-person cat adventure game set amidst the detailed neon-lit alleys of a decaying cybercity and the murky environments of its seedy underbelly with the drone companion, B-12. Since the news was recently announced, there is no release date yet for the anticipated animated film.

The head of Annapurna Animation, Robert Baird, spoke with Entertainment Weekly about what fans can expect from the movie:

“This is a game that’s all about what makes us human, and there are no humans in it,” he said. “It’s a buddy comedy about a cat and a robot, and there’s such a hilarious dynamic. So, there’s comedy inherent in this, but there’s not one human being in this movie.”

This news comes as part of the announcement that Annapurna Animation will increase its creative leadership and feature slate. The company has brought on board industry experts Nick Bruno (Nimona director), industry veteran Julie Zackary, and Erica Pulcini (Nimona producer).

Bruno is currently working on several new original ideas under Annapurna Interactive, including an original feature film that has yet to be named. The former Blue Sky Studios executive Zackary will lead the company’s animation division, while Pulcini will serve as the creative executive responsible for curating, developing, and defining Annapurna Animation’s feature film slate.

In our review of Stray, we said, “Stray succeeds because it’s an engrossing adventure title with atmosphere, well-made aesthetics, a cool but not quite on-the-nose plot about a crumbled society trying to break out of its self-made chains, and some great adventure gaming gameplay that mixes puzzles with cat grace action. And the whole package is made for cat people & lovers in mind.”

In the meantime, check out the first 20+ minutes walkthrough of the indie game Stray from Annapurna Interactive and BlueTwelve Studios.
