The Games Of 2024: Our Picks & Highlights

2023 has come and gone; we’ve had a lot of fun with all the games during that time. Now it’s time to look to the future.

2024 is already looking crazy with many releases somehow already piling up in January and February. However, let’s also not forget the other titles coming out in the latter half.

Here are the games we’re looking forward to in 2024:

Prince Of Persia The Lost Crown (PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PC)

Release Date: 16 January 2024

What Is It? A Metroidvania using the Prince of Persia license from Ubisoft. You play as Sargon, one of the Immortals, as he has to rescue the titular Prince of Persia from a place stuck in time. Initial impressions seem positive as the game features slick controls and a “new” search action take on the 2D Prince of Persia series, which does beg the question “what took them so long to do this?”.

Tekken 8 (PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC)

Release Date: 26 January 2024

What Is It? The eighth main and tenth overall entry in the long-running and iconic fighting game franchise. Tekken 8 will also be the first game in the series to be powered by Unreal Engine 5. It will feature 32 fighters at launch, including fan favourites such as Jin, Kazuya, Law, Paul and many others. Said to feature the “final” confrontation between Kazuya and Heihachi, but this is Tekken we’re talking about, so yeah, seems unlikely to be the case.

Like A Dragon Infinite Wealth (PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PC)

Release Date: 26 January 2024

What Is It? The latest entry in the iconic Yakuza (or now, Like A Dragon) franchise by Sega and RGG Studio. However, unlike the majority of previous Yakuza/Like A Dragon games, Like A Dragon Infinite Wealth continues to employ the unique turn-based combat of its predecessor, Yakuza Like A Dragon. Plus, just like any Yakuza game, this one will feature tons of wacky and fun minigames, including a Crazy Taxi-like fast food delivery game and of course, karaoke.

Suicide Squad Kill The Justice League (PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC)

Release Date: 2 February 2024

What Is It? This game has been embroiled in controversies due to its apparently live-service nature and predatory mechanics, but perhaps Rocksteady still has some of that Batman Arkham franchise magic injected into Suicide Squad Kill The Justice League. It’s a third-person action shooter where the ultimate band of misfits, the Suicide Squad, must do the impossible to save the world: Kill the Justice League.

Persona 3 Reload (PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC)

Release Date: 2 February 2024

What Is It? Persona 3 Reload is a remake of the iconic JRPG of the same name, Persona 3. It’s been rebuilt with better graphics (which honestly look even better than the mediocre Persona 5), as well as a lot of quality-of-life improvements such as being able to run in dungeons and an assist feature for newcomers not used to the Persona franchise’s combat mechanics. If you like Persona 5, you should definitely look out for Persona 3 Reload; it’s going to be better than Persona 5 in almost every way.

Skull & Bones (PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC)

Release Date: 13 February 2024

What Is It? It’s the game that’s been in development hell for a loooooong time. Basically, Skull & Bones is taking the whole naval gameplay and combat from Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag and turning it into a full-fledged game. Ubisoft Singapore is taking the reins for this one and hopefully, it’s at least as fun as the premise promises to be. Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate’s life for me.

Banishers: Ghosts Of New Eden (PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC)

Release Date: 13 February 2024

What Is It? Don’t Nod is trying to shed its old image with these new games. The developer, previously known for making narrative-heavy games like Life Is Strange, is now putting its hat into combat-heavy games with Banishers Ghosts Of New Eden. It’s a third-person action RPG where players assume control of a pair of ghost hunters named Antea Duarte and Red Mac Raith. One of them becomes a ghost and gains spirit abilities. In the game, players will have to make numerous choices, influencing the game’s story.

Arzette The Jewel Of Faramore (PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, PC)

Release Date: 13 February 2024

What Is It? It’s another Metroidvania, albeit one with unique hand-painted backgrounds and retro sprite art. And yes, it’s made by the same people behind Zelda CD-i games of the 1990s, so that’s why it looks familiar for retro gamers and those who endured the mid-90s. Players assume the role of Arzette and must explore the Kingdom of Faramore, slay fearsome foes, acquire powerful items, discover secrets, assist colourful characters, and defeat the evil Daimur.

Mario Vs. Donkey Kong (Nintendo Switch)

Release Date: 16 February 2024

What Is It? A 2D puzzle game where Mario solves a bunch of puzzles to thwart Donkey Kong and his mechanical army. It’s a remake of the original 2004 puzzle-platform game. The game concept revolves around a combination of platform and puzzle elements, challenging Mario to find keys, reach a locked door, and rescue mini-Marios.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth (PS5)

Release Date: 24 February 2024

What Is It? The follow-up to Final Fantasy VII Remake, this PS5 exclusive remakes the second half of the first disc of the JRPG Final Fantasy VII back in the 90s. Follow Cloud and co. as they explore the world post-Midgard kerfuffle, breeding Chocobos, discovering revelations of the planet they’re on, fighting giant monsters, and playing minigames in the Golden Saucer to advance the plot.

Shiren The Wanderer The Mystery Dungeon Of Serpentcoil Island

Release Date: 27 February 2024

What Is It? It is the sixth main entry in the Shiren the Wanderer series, which is a subset of the larger Mystery Dungeon series. It’s a roguelike RPG in which the player traverses randomized dungeons and fights monsters. The game is coming to Japan first in January 2024, but players everywhere else can have their hands on it just a month later.

Unicorn Overlord (PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch)

Release Date: 8 March 2024

What Is It? A real-time strategy and tactical role-playing game combination; think Fire Emblem meets Heroes of Might & Magic. Set on the fantasy world of Fevrith, the plot involves the exiled prince Alain as he gathers an army from the five kingdoms to reclaim his throne from the traitorous General Valmore. There are tons of heroes and mercenaries to recruit, and your characters can even form relationships and get married.

Alone In The Dark (PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC)

Release Date: 20 March 2024

What Is It? This remake of the ground-breaking original lets you experience a haunting story through the eyes of one of two protagonists. Play as either Edward Carnby or Emily Hartwood and explore your environments, fight monsters, solve puzzles and uncover the uneasy truth of Derceto Mano. Plus, both of the protagonists are portrayed by famous Hollywood actors, Jodie Comer and David Harbour. Let’s hope 2024 is as good of a year for horror games as 2023 was (with Dead Space Remake, RE4 Remake and Alan Wake 2).

Dragon’s Dogma 2 (PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC)

Release Date: 22 March 2024

What Is It? Dragon’s Dogma 2 is a single-player, narrative-driven action RPG that challenges the players to choose their own experience, from the appearance of their Arisen, their vocation, their party, how to approach different situations and more in a truly immersive fantasy world. This is perhaps one of the most highly-anticipated games of the year, so let’s hope it kickstarts another year of great games.

Princess Peach Showtime! (Nintendo Switch)

Release Date: 22 March 2024

What Is It? Princess Peach gets her own game, so it’s time for girl power. In this game, Princess Peach’s trip to the Sparkle Theater goes off-script when the wicked Grape and the Sour Bunch steal the show. Partner with the theatre’s guardian, Stella, to call curtains on this tragedy by using a powerful ribbon and taking on several starring roles, each with their look and abilities. These transformations range from swordfighters and detectives to kung fu masters and chefs.

Rise Of The Ronin (PS5)

Release Date: 22 March 2024

What Is It? Rise Of The Ronin is a new action RPG from Team Ninja, best known for Nioh and the Ninja Gaiden games. Just like Nioh before it, players can create their own custom characters and use a bunch of different weapons. It seems like this game will be a more realistic version of Nioh and more historically accurate. It is set in Japan at the end of the 19th century during the Boshin War, with melee weapons like swords and spears, as well as ranged weapons like firearms and thrown weapons. So, yeah, it’s basically also Ghost Of Tsushima 2.0.

Eiyuden Chronicle Hundred Heroes (PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, PC)

Release Date: 24 April 2024

What Is It? A Japanese role-playing game styled after Konami’s Suikoden series back in the PlayStation era. Gather 140 heroes to thwart a giant governmental conspiracy in the fantasy world of Allraan. This is for those who miss these types of old-school JRPGs, so it’s great that we’re still getting them.

Black Myth Wukong (PS5, Xbox Series, PC)

Release Date: 20 August 2024

What Is It? This game has been garnering attention for several years now since it was announced back in 2020 due to how amazing the graphics were. It’s an action RPG game based on Chinese mythology Journey To The West. It essentially looks like Soulsbourne meets Sun Wukong, but with visuals that elevate it even further. Let’s hope it lives up to the hype.

Warhammer 40K Space Marine 2 (PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC)

Release Date: 9 September 2024

What Is It? It’s a third-person action game where you control a Space Marine killing all sorts of hostile races in the Warhammer 40K universe. If it’s as action-packed and visceral as the first game during the Xbox HD era, we’ll have a blast with this.

Greedfall 2 The Dying World (PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC)

Release Window: 2024

What Is It? The first game was a surprise, turning out to be one of the few games out there that still feels like a classic BioWare game in spirit. In GreedFall 2 The Dying World, the story starts three years before the events of the first game and the adventures of De Sardet. This time you play as a native of Teer Fradee, uprooted by force from your island and taken to the continent of Gacane, where the colonists are from. In this old world ravaged by war and scarred by the Malichor plague and the political scheming of the different factions, you need to regain your freedom and control of your own destiny. Using diplomacy, cunning or combat, as well as help from allies you make, it’s up to you to end one man’s ambitions of conquest, which could spell the end for the continent and your island.

The Plucky Squire (PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, PC)

Your selection of agents range from a trio of maids with their own weapons to a well-endowed mechanic.
