Rise Of The Ronin Factions of the Bakumatsu Era Revealed
By Alisha Alix|January 16, 2024|0 Comment
Publisher Sony Interactive Entertainment and developer Team NINJA have unveiled new details for the anticipated open-world action-adventure title, Rise of the Ronin. The new information was revealed on the game’s official website where players can now get to know the factions during the Bakumatsu Era.
Based on the website, the political factions in this tumultuous period can be categorized into three groups: Sabaku, which represents pro-shogunate forces, Tobaku represents anti-shogunate entities, and Obei, which encompasses Western forces. These factions play a crucial role in vying for power within this dynamic political landscape.
Loyal hearts, steadfast resolve.
During the Bakumatsu era, the pro-shogun forces were fervent supporters of Tokugawa and actively committed to preserving the centralized rule established by the shogunate. Their primary objective was to safeguard the shogunate against both external pressures and internal threats, thereby upholding the existing political order.
The chief executive of the shogunate and clan lord of Hikone, Naosuke Li, played a significant role in opening up Japan’s ports to foreign trade. However, his aggressive approach to suppressing his opposition earned him the moniker “The Red Demon of Ii”, a nickname inherited from his ancestral lineage.
In terms of martial arts, Iai was his forte, showcasing his extraordinary skill in this field. Despite his fearsome reputation, Li was admired for his refined tastes and profound knowledge of various aspects of life, including the art of tea appreciation and poetry.
The weapon was originally passed down by members of the Ii clan. Over time, it underwent modifications and acquired ornamental fittings that were inspired by the nickname given to Naomasa Ii, the 20th clan head. This nickname, known as the “Red Demon,” served as the driving force behind the decorative embellishments.
Taka Murayama, a renowned geisha of the Miyozaki pleasure district in Yokohama, has garnered recognition for her exceptional wit and enigmatic beauty. It is rumoured that she has previously showcased her skills as a geisha in Kyoto.
Silent no more.
The anti-shogunate forces encompass a myriad of individuals and groups that find common ground in their opposition to the shogunate’s governance and their unwavering commitment to restoring imperial authority in Japan.
Ryoma Sakamoto, Ronin formerly of the Tosa clan, possesses a resolute demeanour as he navigates the uncharted waters of Japan’s exposure to foreign trade. With a steadfast determination to maintain a steady grip on the steering wheel of the nation, he tirelessly seeks the best course of action. Ryoma possesses an endearingly earnest personality, which quickly gains the affection of those around him.
In addition to mastering the Hokushin-Itto-ryu school of swordplay, Ryoma showcases his prowess as a marksman with a pistol modelled after Western designs. This multifaceted skillset makes him a force to be reckoned with in various circumstances.
The masterpiece was crafted by a renowned Tosa swordsmith, a cherished family heirloom known as Mutsunokami Yoshiyuki. It boasts a stunning custom mount, a dragon-themed scabbard, and an intricate hilt ornament.
Kogoro Katsura, the distinguished feudal retainer of the Choshu clan, holds a position of significance as a close associate of Shoin Yoshida. Possessing a compassionate nature, he mentors the clan’s younger retainers. Through his efforts, he has earned Choshu’s senior statesmen’s trust and respect for his level-headed and cautious approach. However, Kogoro’s singular flaw lies in his unhealthy predilection for sake, which has resulted in the occasional scandal.
A Sue-Bizen work of the Osafune school, this exquisite blade showcases an ornate mounting specifically tailored for Katsura. The sword’s hilt ornament and scabbard prominently feature a pine motif.
The winds of change.
The Western forces of the Bakumatsu era, consisting of the United States and European powers, aimed to open up Japan to foreign trade, leading to the end of the country’s long-standing isolationist policies and having a substantial impact on its political and economic landscape.
Commodore Matthew, entrusted with the responsibility of opening Japan’s ports for trade, has been directed by President Millard Fillmore to lead a fleet known as the Black Ships on a circumnavigation of the globe. This expedition was undertaken to secure the opening of Japan’s ports before any other Western power.
The Commodore’s Saber is the prestigious sword that is issued to officers of the United States Navy. Its hilt, guard, and scabbard are embellished with gold-plated brass, highlighting the exquisite craftsmanship that went into creating this weapon.
Rutherford Alcock, a renowned British diplomat, has been charged with evaluating the significance of Japan’s integration into the global economy and reporting his findings to his superiors. Despite his outspoken condemnation of the shogunate’s exclusionary policies, which he describes as “barbaric,” Alcock possesses a deep admiration for the exquisite craftsmanship showcased in Japanese art.
A former surgeon by profession, he demonstrates unwavering dedication whenever he is called upon to provide medical assistance, particularly in the treatment of the wounded.
Despite his constant accompaniment by a team of bodyguards, Alcock remains vigilant and carries a saber with him at all times, prepared to wield it if necessary to safeguard his life.
Rise of the Ronin is slated to launch for PlayStation 5 on 22 March 2024.
