Helldivers 2 Review: Enlist Now!
Platform(s): PC (version reviewed), PlayStation 5
Genre: Third-person co-op shooter
The first Helldivers, a top-shooter co-op game, was memorable for its brutal friendly fire mechanics and intense gameplay and was quite a hit back in 2015. It didn’t seem like a sequel-worthy kind of franchise, but good on developer Arrowhead Games Studio (of Magicka fame) for proving us wrong and turning the formula around with Helldivers 2.
Helldivers 2 opts for a third-person over-the-shoulder perspective, bringing you closer to the action. This, along with its humourous military fanaticism tone and its improved shooting mechanics and action, is what warrants a sequel to take this current year filled with live service games by storm. The shooting feels very refined and punchy, the in-game progression feels good without being forced, the randomized nature of the missions you receive (whether in single-player or co-op) just keeps you going at it while adding variety, and the friendly fire applied here will keep you on your toes and be very careful about what you’re calling down to support you.
