X-Men ’97 Showrunner Answers: Is The Animated Series Canon To The MCU?

Disney+ and Marvel’s upcoming X-Men ’97 animated series will premiere on Disney+ on 20 March 2024 but is it canon to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU)?

According to X-Men ’97 showrunner and head writer Beau DeMayo (via his Instagram account), X-Men ’97 is not canon to the MCU, which is obvious for most fans considering that the X-Men has yet to be officially introduced in the MCU (the post-credits scene in The Marvels and Charles Xavier in Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness don’t count).

“X-Men’97” revisits the iconic era of the 1990s as The X-Men, a band of mutants who use their uncanny gifts to protect a world that hates and fears them, are challenged like never before, forced to face a dangerous and unexpected new future. The voice cast includes Ray Chase as Cyclops, Jennifer Hale as Jean Grey, Alison Sealy-Smith as Storm, Cal Dodd as Wolverine, JP Karliak as Morph, Lenore Zann as Rogue, George Buza as Beast, AJ LoCascio as Gambit, Holly Chou as Jubilee, Isaac Robinson-Smith as Bishop, Matthew Waterson as Magneto and Adrian Hough as Nightcrawler. Beau DeMayo serves as head writer; episodes are directed by Jake Castorena, Chase Conley and Emi Yonemura. Featuring music by The Newton Brothers, the series is executive produced by Brad Winderbaum, Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso and DeMayo.

X-Men The Animated Series originally aired on Fox Kids for 76 episodes across five seasons from 1992 to 1997. The series is currently available to stream on Disney+ Hotstar.
