Longtime Fighting Game Player Marn Currently Hospitalized & In Critical Care

Fighting game players who have been tuning in to the scene since the 2008 days of Street Fighter 4 should know who pro player Martin “Marn” Phan is. The worldwide fighting game community was a little more interesting thanks to his involvement and contributions, featuring high-level play for Street Fighter 4, Marvel vs Capcom 3, and more.

Unfortunately, this piece of news is about his ailing health. Recently, Marn ended up in a medically-induced coma to help his body recover from a bacterial infection called Melioidosis, which caused him to suffer pneumonia. His longtime fellow FGC member Sherry “Sherryjenix” Nhan has started a GoFundMe campaign on behalf of him and his family in Vietnam.

“He was put on a ventilator to help maintain his oxygen levels while sedated with 30+ other medications. They found many underlying conditions while he was infected, including early kidney disease, indicating diabetes.”

He was also laid off from his job and lost his health insurance. After 8 days of treatment, Marn’s hospital bills were a total of US$8,000. The GoFundMe campaign set a fundraising goal of US$20,000 to cover that and his continued hospitalization. As of this time of reporting, the donation threshold has been met with the campaign now at US$21,200.

Marn has competed overseas and in Southeast Asia, especially in tournaments such as South East Asia Majors in Singapore and other parts of SEA. We wish Marn a speedy recovery and sympathise with his family during this time of crisis.
