Square Enix Unveils New Details For Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake
By Lewis Larcombe|July 11, 2024|0 Comment
Publisher Square Enix and developer Artdink Corporation have unveiled fresh insights and screenshots for the highly anticipated Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake. The latest update showcases the story, protagonist, world, spells, and abilities of the game, along with gameplay videos from various Japanese outlets.
Marking 36 years since its original release in 1988, Dragon Quest III is set to make a grand return in HD-2D. The remake is scheduled for a simultaneous worldwide release on 14 November 2024, and will be available for Nintendo Switch, PS5, Xbox Series X | S, Steam, and Microsoft Store on Windows. This new version enriches the classic game with added scenes, voiced cutscenes, and an orchestral soundtrack.
HD-2D is a unique visual style developed by Square Enix’s Team Asano, blending pixel art with 3D graphics. The style combines pixel sprites with detailed 3D backgrounds and video effects, creating a contemporary visual experience reminiscent of classic gaming.
Set in the peaceful kingdom of Aliahan, players assume the role of Ortega’s child, who embarks on a quest to defeat the Archfiend Baramos following a directive from the king on their sixteenth birthday. The journey to save the world is filled with unexpected challenges and surprises.
As the child of the legendary hero Ortega, the protagonist sets out on their sixteenth birthday to finish what their father started. Players can choose between two appearances, each voiced by prominent actors in both English and Japanese.
Exploration is a core aspect of the game. Players and their allies will traverse diverse landscapes, including meadows, forests, deserts, tundras, and rocky escarpments. Day and night cycles and interactions with locals provide clues and aid in solving the world’s mysteries. Dungeons, caves, and towers hide valuable treasures necessary for progression, while owning a ship unlocks new areas to explore.
Combat is turn-based, allowing players to command their party without time constraints. A variety of spells and abilities, each with unique effects, can be used to defeat monsters. Battles reward players with experience points and gold coins, which are essential for levelling up and acquiring powerful equipment.
Fans have more to look forward to with the upcoming HD-2D remakes of Dragon Quest I & II, set for release in 2025. Playing these remakes in sequence with Dragon Quest III will reveal new surprises and deepen the connection within the “Erdrick Trilogy.”
Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake will be available for PS5, Xbox Series X | S, Switch, and PC via Steam and Microsoft Store on 14 November.
