To say that the Borderlands movie adaptation flopped pretty hard in its box office debut worldwide is underselling it.

The Borderlands movie starring Cate Blanchett as Lilith (already a miscasting in the works) brought in US$7.7 million worldwide out of a US$16.5 million total box office tally. The film’s production budget? It’s US$115 million plus US$30 million for marketing and distribution. We saw the movie and it’s pretty bad, though some easter eggs-spotting did make the show bearable at the very least.

Gearbox Software head honcho Randy Pitchford didn’t take the criticism too well, banning certain content creators like KillerSix for their fair critiques before unblocking them due to an “accident”.

This usually means that Borderlands IP owners 2K Games are letting makers Gearbox Software change course in the narrative with this piece of news: there is a new Borderlands sequel in the works and we’ll be hearing about it soon enough! Randy Pitchford said Gearbox is hard at work on the next entry in the looter shooter series.

2K Games stated earlier that the next Borderlands game was in active development after acquiring Gearbox from Embracer Group for US$460 million. So this shouldn’t come as a huge surprise, though it’s good to hear that we’ll be hearing more about part 4 soon enough.
