Arcane Season 2 Review: Stunning Visuals, Rushed Narrative
By Lewis Larcombe|November 25, 2024|0 Comment
Arcane Season 2 had big shoes to fill after the critical and audience acclaim of its predecessor. The first season set a high bar with its intricate character arcs, breathtaking animation, and a meticulously crafted story blending the politics of Piltover and the struggles of Zaun. Season 2, while equally stunning in its visual execution, struggles with its pacing, leaving many of its promising storylines and emotional beats underdeveloped.
Picking up directly after the explosive cliffhanger of Season 1, this sequel takes viewers back to the chaotic aftermath of Jinx’s actions. With themes of revenge, redemption, and rebellion woven throughout, Season 2 aims high, but its breakneck pace often undermines its emotional depth. Let’s unpack what worked, what didn’t, and why this season, despite its beauty, felt unsatisfying.
The season opens with the immediate fallout of Jinx’s rocket attack on the council chamber. Caitlyn, reeling from the death of her mother and several council members, becomes a driving force for justice. Yet, instead of fully exploring her grief or the political ramifications of this attack, the story rapidly shifts gears. Another attack follows in quick succession, and the narrative moves forward without giving viewers time to process these events.
This hurried storytelling becomes a recurring issue throughout the season. Viktor’s transformation into a prophetic figure, Caitlyn stepping into a leadership role, and Jinx’s internal tug-of-war between rebellion and peace are all fascinating developments that feel too rushed to carry the weight they deserve. Key moments happen so quickly that their emotional impact is diminished, leaving viewers with little time to connect with the characters’ evolving arcs.
One of the more perplexing elements of Season 2 is the introduction of Hextech timeline anomalies. Jayce, Ekko, and Heimerdinger venture into the Undercity to investigate these disturbances, only for the anomalies to disrupt Hextech weapons mid-battle during a crucial confrontation involving Vi, Caitlyn, Jinx, and Sevika. While this plotline introduces intriguing sci-fi concepts, it’s frustratingly underexplained.
The anomalies seem to affect different characters in various ways—Ekko and Heimerdinger are transported to a parallel universe, while Jayce appears unaffected aside from his malfunctioning weaponry. The lack of clear rules or explanations leaves the audience scrambling to piece together what’s happening, detracting from the story’s overall coherence.
Jinx’s character arc is arguably the most compelling aspect of Arcane, and Season 2 continues to explore her fractured psyche. Act II introduces a time skip, showing Jinx as a symbol of rebellion while simultaneously living a quieter life with Isha, a young girl she’s taken under her wing. This softer portrayal of Jinx is a refreshing change, offering a glimpse of what she might have been without the trauma and violence that shaped her.
However, the transition from chaotic villain to nurturing sister figure feels abrupt. The show doesn’t give enough time to explore Jinx’s internal struggle, making her eventual return to rebellion—triggered by Isha’s imprisonment—feel predictable rather than impactful. While her relationship with Isha adds a layer of humanity to her character, it deserves more screen time to develop naturally.
Singed’s experimentation on Warwick—a fan-favourite reveal for League of Legends players—is one of the season’s standout moments. The depiction of Warwick’s blood-hunting instincts is both chilling and poignant, especially as flashes of his past life as Vander resurface. His faint recognition of Powder (Jinx) adds an emotional weight that ties beautifully into the series’ overarching themes of identity and loss.
Unfortunately, these moments are fleeting. Warwick’s escape from prison, his reunion with Vi, and the subsequent confrontation lack the time and focus needed to fully explore these relationships. Vander’s transformation into Warwick is a powerful narrative thread that deserves more attention but is instead overshadowed by the season’s relentless pacing.
The final act attempts to tie together the season’s disparate threads while introducing even more plot twists. Ekko and Heimerdinger’s parallel universe subplot provides a bittersweet glimpse into an alternate reality where Powder never became Jinx. This “what could have been” scenario is a recurring theme in Arcane, but its emotional potential is undermined by the limited time devoted to it. Ekko’s decision to return to the original timeline, leaving behind a happier version of Powder, is poignant but lacks the build-up to make it truly heart-wrenching.
Meanwhile, Jayce, Viktor, and Caitlyn’s respective storylines become increasingly convoluted. Viktor’s transformation into a prophet with a godlike perspective is visually stunning but narratively muddled. Caitlyn’s continued rivalry with Ambessa, combined with Mel’s recruitment by Black Rose, adds layers of political intrigue that feel underexplored. The climactic confrontation involving Viktor, Warwick, and Jinx is visually spectacular but narratively overwhelming, with too many moving parts to fully digest.
The season concludes with a flurry of action and emotional moments, but it leaves many questions unanswered. Jinx’s fate, in particular, is left ambiguous. After a devastating showdown, she seemingly sacrifices herself, but subtle hints—such as Caitlyn examining blueprints and clutching one of Jinx’s signature monkeys—suggest she might have survived. While this ambiguity might work for some viewers, it feels like an unsatisfying end to Jinx’s tumultuous journey.
Other characters fare no better. Vi and Caitlyn get a semblance of closure, but Ekko, Heimerdinger, and Mel’s arcs remain unresolved. Singed’s success in reviving Orianna is a tantalising glimpse of what’s to come but offers little payoff within the context of this season.
Arcane Season 2 is a visual masterpiece, with jaw-dropping animation and a hauntingly beautiful soundtrack that elevates every scene. The show continues to excel in its world-building, capturing the gritty dichotomy of Piltover’s opulence and Zaun’s despair. Yet, its storytelling struggles to keep up with its ambition.
By attempting to juggle too many plotlines in too few episodes, the season sacrifices emotional depth and narrative clarity. While it remains an incredible piece of animation, it doesn’t quite reach the heights of its predecessor.
Season 2 sets the stage for future stories in the League of Legends universe, and there’s no shortage of fascinating regions to explore—Noxus, Ionia, and the Shadow Isles, to name a few. With more room to breathe, future instalments have the potential to deliver the depth and nuance that Arcane fans have come to expect. Despite its flaws, this season proves that Arcane remains a unique and ambitious storytelling force in animation.
