Tom Hardy’s Splinter Cell Movie Shelved

After years of silence, the much-anticipated Splinter Cell movie starring Tom Hardy has officially been canned, according to producer Basil Iwanyk.

Initially announced in 2012, the live-action adaptation of Ubisoft’s hit stealth-action franchise had Hardy lined up to play Sam Fisher, the iconic black-ops agent. But despite the buzz surrounding the project, it seems this mission will remain unaccomplished.

“That movie would have been awesome,” Iwanyk shared with The Direct.

“Just couldn’t get it right, script-wise, budget-wise. But it was going to be great. We had a million different versions of it, but it was going to be hardcore and awesome. That’s one of the ones that got away, which is really sad.”

Fans of the Splinter Cell series, which revolves around covert National Security Agency agent Sam Fisher, will have to turn to other mediums for their fix. Ubisoft is currently working on a remake of the original 2002 game using its Snowdrop engine, famed for powering The Division and Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora. The remake promises not just a visual overhaul but a reimagined story to resonate with modern audiences.

Meanwhile, Netflix is developing an animated series titled Splinter Cell: Deathwatch. Although details remain sparse, it has been teased as “coming soon.”

While Hardy’s take on Sam Fisher will never see the light of day, the Splinter Cell legacy is far from over, as Ubisoft continues to expand the franchise in fresh directions.
