A Closer Look At How South Of Midnight Weaves Its Spell & Its Release Date
By Lewis Larcombe|January 24, 2025|0 Comment
During this year’s Xbox Developer_Direct, Compulsion Games announced that their moody, Southern Gothic adventure will launch on 8 April 2025. The game will be available on Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Xbox Game Pass from day one.
This isn’t just another gloomy adventure, though. Oh no. You’ll be stepping into the shoes of Hazel, a young woman from the quaint little town of Prospero, whose life gets turned upside down thanks to a storm. But we’re not talking about your usual post-hurricane insurance claims. This storm gives Hazel the powers of a Weaver—think of it as a magical tailor who stitches together reality and the spirits of the dead. Fancy, right?
With her newfound skills, Hazel will tackle monstrous Haints, piece together her family’s messy history, and, if she plays her cards right, find a place she can call home. It’s a story dripping with Southern folklore, complete with moody swamps, eerie towns, and creatures that look like they’ve crawled straight out of your nightmares.
And let’s talk about the visuals. They’re not just good—they’re wow good. The stop-motion-inspired animations give everything a hauntingly beautiful, otherworldly vibe. Even the monsters look so meticulously crafted that you might almost feel bad when you smack them (almost).
This is Compulsion Games’ first release under Xbox Game Studios since Microsoft scooped them up in 2018. You might remember them from We Happy Few, the game where everyone pretended they were happy by taking pills. South of Midnight feels like an evolution—a darker, richer, more atmospheric leap forward.
So, 8 April is the day. Whether you’re into untangling messy family histories, battling nightmarish creatures, or just gawking at the gorgeous scenery, South of Midnight looks like a must-play. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to clear my calendar.
