God of War Returns To Greece—But It’s Not What You Think

Kratos might be packing his bags for a trip back to Greece this year—at least, that’s what the latest whispers suggest. But before you start sharpening your Blades of Chaos in anticipation of a remastered collection, hold your horses. According to industry insider Jeff Grubb, this isn’t a nostalgia-fueled re-release but an entirely new God of War side-story project.
For months, speculation has been swirling about a remastered collection, supposedly set to coincide with God of War’s 20th anniversary. But Grubb, posting on Bluesky, put an end to that rumour, claiming that while something Greek is indeed in the works, it’s not a remaster.
OK. Everyone keeps asking about this, so I've tried to find out more: There's still a Greek God of War thing coming out this year, but it's not a remaster collection. It's a new side-story project.
“I was never told about a remaster collection,” Grubb clarified, “but when I asked a source about all the chatter, they confirmed that while God of War wouldn’t appear at the recent State of Play, something might surface during the anniversary celebrations.”
So, what exactly is this mystery project? A prequel? A spin-off? A surprise return to Kratos’ rage-fueled past? Details are scarce, but one thing is certain—Sony is rolling out the red carpet for God of War’s big 2-0. The anniversary festivities will include fresh in-game content for God of War Ragnarok, an art exhibition, and new merchandise.
Speaking of Ragnarok, players can claim the free Dark Odyssey Collection starting 20 March, adding a bit of extra flair to Kratos’ wardrobe. And in case you missed it, Ragnarok was recently added to PlayStation Plus in January—just as Sony reportedly axed two unannounced live-service projects, one of which was allegedly a God of War game.
Sony’s 2025 lineup is already looking stacked, with Ghost of Yotei, the Ghost of Tsushima sequel, and Death Stranding 2 on the way. But if Kratos truly is making a return to his old stomping grounds, fans might just have another reason to get excited.
