Silent Hill f Takes the Horror to Japan
By Lewis Larcombe|March 14, 2025|0 Comment
For decades, Silent Hill has been synonymous with fog-drenched American horror, psychological torment, and the occasional questionable combat system. But now, Konami has decided to shake things up—by swapping its familiar eerie town in Maine for 1960s Japan. Yes, the fog is back, but this time, it’s creeping through the streets of a small Japanese town, and things are about to get unsettling in a whole new way.
First announced back in October 2022, Silent Hill f went radio silent for over a year, leaving fans wondering whether it had been lost in the fog for good. But thanks to the latest Silent Hill Transmission, we finally have another look at what’s shaping up to be one of the most intriguing entries in the series.
Developed by Taiwan-based NeoBards Entertainment, Silent Hill F trades the dreary American town of Silent Hill for the eerie beauty of 1960s Japan. Instead of another tale of suburban nightmares, this one follows Shimizu Hinako, an ordinary teenager whose peaceful life is rudely interrupted when her town transforms into a grotesque nightmare. Fog rolls in, reality distorts, and she’s left to fend off otherworldly horrors while solving puzzles, fighting grotesque creatures, and ultimately making one deeply unsettling choice.
According to Silent Hill series producer Motoi Okamoto, Silent Hill f embraces the idea of “finding beauty in terror”—a staple of Japanese horror. He explains that when something is too beautiful, it stops being comforting and instead becomes deeply disturbing. Expect flowers that bloom a little too perfectly, serenity that feels just a bit off, and horrors wrapped in an almost hypnotic aesthetic.
The game’s narrative is penned by Ryukishi07, a writer renowned for crafting Japanese visual novels full of psychological horror, supernatural dread, and good old-fashioned murder mysteries. Meanwhile, NeoBards is no stranger to handling classic IPs, having worked on Devil May Cry HD Collection, Onimusha: Warlords Remaster, and multiple Resident Evil titles.
As for when Silent Hill f will unleash its horrors, Konami is still keeping that information locked away. But when it does arrive on PS5, Xbox Series X | S, and PC, one thing’s for sure—Silent Hill has never looked this unsettlingly gorgeous.
