The Makers Of Zelda-Like Title Pipistrello and the Cursed Yoyo Will Let You Play Their Game In A Unique Way

Retro game enthusiasts Pocket Trap are clearly fans of the Game Boy Advance. So much so that their upcoming game will let you play their title in an “old” new light.

Pocket Trap will add in a retro feature in their upcoming 2D Zelda-like action title Pipistrello and the Cursed Yoyo, and by that I mean in Nintendo Game Boy Advance-esque handheld style. There’s a display option in the game called handheld/3D Console mode where you can play the whole game on a tiny Game Boy Advance-like screen and on a virtual handheld console.

If you’re feeling extra nostalgic, you can play the game with the glass screen on, with different filters like a perfect condition screen or even a broken one! You can event adjust the pixel scale and the font (using Pixel Perfect and Double Resolution options).

Pipistrello and the Cursed Yoyo will be out in 29 May GMT+8 for PC and consoles. You can play a demo of the game right now; we’ve tried out a majority of it and it’s really fun! Playing as Pipistrello is responsive and he can do some neat tricks with his yoyo like using stage angles to extend its reach and attack, hitting enemies from afar. He can even toss it, no strings attached, to activate far-to-hit switches or even tougher enemies as it pierces through targets in this attack mode. And playing as a spoiled kid who would eventually learn how to stand on his own two feet and get some important life lessons is a lot more refreshing than playing as a mute do-gooder.

The demo’s pretty short, but we’re really digging this game’s potential. We might say this is a dark horse entry in a year filled with awesome indie games, though time will tell if it will surpass its status as just being a throwback to GBA top-down Zelda-like games.
