Sega will be releasing the next Shinobi entry after so many years: it’s called Shinobi – Art of Vengeance and it’s developed by Lizard Cube Games who are known for the Wonder Boy remake and Streets of Rage 4.

To say this game looks great is underselling it: the new Shinobi game revels in its 2D roots and made it better with its new art style and its representation of iconic locals like the ninja village Joe Musashi is from to the city he has to infiltrate at night and in the rain. Sega has released a slew of new stage intro videos, and they showcase how gorgeous they look.

I especially love how some of these stage transitions happen in subtle ways, changing backdrops when you least expect it and establishing its intended mood, be it the serenity and calm of the Oboro Village before it goes up in flame, to the neon lighting of Neo City and its ever-continuing downpour.

Shinobi: The Art of Vengeance will be out for PC and consoles on 29th August 2025.
