This year’s biggest fighting game tournament that isn’t EVO just came and went: Community Effort Orlando, or CEO 2026. It’s one of the premiere fighting game tournaments that also hosted two fighting game debuts: Avatar Legends – The Fighting Game and Marvel Tokon – Fighting Souls. And they both got the ovations and hyped crowds they deserve.

It is interesting to note, however, that the winners of both tournaments used villain characters to carry them from pools to the finals. Over at Avatar Legends’ side, Xcaliburbladez used Zaheer, a notable villain in Avatar: The Legend of Korra and arguably a tough character to master when compared to Toph and Azula Firelord mode. The tournament’s top 25 featured a ton of high-level games, with huge mastery over the game’s Flow system with their respective characters. But it’s clearly Xcaliburbladez’ deft use of his assists (and the “P’li” cheering of the crowd) that got the crowd hyped.

Not to mention the mysterious high-level player 1999 Honda Civic also taking names at the Avatar Legends Rumble. They used Sokka like their lives and masked identity depended on it.

Over at Marvel Tokon’s corner, renowned fighting game player SonicFox took home the gold. He led the charge with his Green Goblin on point, a villain renowned to be prominent in Marvel lore as Spider-Man’s nemesis. Together with a team consisting of Spider-Man, Magneto, and Blade, he showed the whole of CEO that he is an incredibly tricky character to deal with. Other players like EG|Supernoon and Kayos, who was the sole top 8 player rocking a high-level Peni Parker, did their best but couldn’t figure out SonicFox’s playstyle in the end. The game’s current meta also tracks, as staple characters locked into teams usually have Spider-Man, Magik, Magneto, and/or Blade.

The winner also had this to say, attributing his win as a spite. He previously said that the game had problems, but was misquoted as completely hating the game.

Also this win should definitely make people actually shut the fuck up and let me voice my opinions on the game LMAOO

ACTUAL delusion to believe that I don’t like a game because I can’t be “good” at it.

This win was purely out of spite.
