Netflix Takes Flak From F1 About Drive To Survive Drama
Formula 1 Drive To Survive is a reality television show produced in a collaboration between Netflix and Formula One to give a behind-the-scenes look at the drivers and races of the Formula One World Championship. The fourth season recently premiered in March 2022 but it has proved to be controversial.
Fans are angry at the fake drama and made-up rivalries featured in the series by using clips or radio messages out of context. For instance the one between Lando Norris and Daniel Ricciardo in the most recent season.
However, the fans can rest now that F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali is holding talks with Netflix to make sure the series tones down all the fake drama and make things more realistic again.
Speaking with La Gazzetta dello Sport, he said:
“It is to be understood that the dramatisation is part of the path to ignite interest, but in this sense there are themes that need to be redefined. If a driver refuses to participate because he is not being presented as he wants, we will talk about it constructively. ‘Tell us how you want to be presented and we’ll find a way’. Netflix managers are already meeting with the teams, but we are on the topic of culture and language. If you want to be in touch with the US market, you have to speak that language – we need to adjust. But that does not mean upsetting us, of course.”
