Fandom Now Owns GameSpot, Giant Bomb, GameFAQs, and Metacritic

Game and pop culture wiki service platform Fandom has just made a substantial amount of purchases.

Fandom now owns a number of major video game news publications and one major aggregate site: GameSpot, Giant Bomb, GameFAQs, and Metacritic. A press release to commemorate this event also stated that Fandom has bought other Red Ventures properties like TV Guide, Cord Cutters News, and Comic Vine. Oh, and Screen Junkies is in the mix.

Fandom as of late has a lot under its belt, with 40 million pages of content, 250,000 Wiki communities, and 300 million monthly active users. The press release that contained these facts said that the combination of these properties will extend its strategic mission to be the fan’s first choice for community and experience. The financials of the deal were not disclosed, but the buyout value is worth US$55 million. Here’s what Fandom CEO Perkins Miller has to say about the deal:

“We’re thrilled to add these powerful, authoritative brands into the Fandom platform, which will expand our business capabilities and provide immersive content for our partners, advertisers and fans. The trusted insights, ratings and content they provide will make us a one-stop shop for fans across their entertainment and gaming journey.”

It remains to be seen if the future of online games media is looking bleak. Buyouts like these mean a lot of reshuffling in the outlet’s respective cabinets. Then again, a number of insiders state that previous owners Red Ventures weren’t exactly the best owners to appease to, so maybe that’s a win.
