Doom Co-Creator John Carmack Leaves Facebook & Meta
It’s the end of a legendary streak as famed rocket scientist and programmer John Carmack (of Doom fame) has left his high-end position with Meta, the company formerly known as Facebook.
John Carmack was the CTO of Oculus and stayed with the company after its Facebook/Meta acquisition back in 2014. His public Facebook announcement declares his time with Meta and VR having “mixed feelings”.
He praised the Quest 2 as a piece of hardware. He appreciates the Quest line’ sales success and massive adoption.
“[The Quest 2] is almost exactly what I wanted to see from the beginning?—mobile hardware, inside out tracking, optional PC streaming, 4k (ish) screen, cost effective”.
His main complaint about Meta is the company’s efficiency, stating that the organization only knows inefficiency.
“We have a ridiculous amount of people and resources. but we constantly self-sabotage and squander effort,” adding that he thinks Meta is “operating at half the effectiveness that would make [him] happy.”
Despite his misgivings, John Carmack did end his post on an optimistic note, stating that Meta is still poised to lead the world in VR implementation as long as the company “makes better decisions”.
