Super Mario Bros Movie Tops US$1 Billion Worldwide & Smashes Japan Box Office Numbers
Play all the victory fanfares for Mario here; Nintendo, Universal, and Illumination have hit the question block jackpot!
The Super Mario Bros. Movie has levelled up its worldwide box office earnings to beyond US$1 billion since its 6th April launch. The film has been showing in theatres worldwide for more than three weeks.
The film has become the 10th animated show in animation history to cross US$1 billion worldwide in a short span of time, overtaking Despicable Me 2 and Minions: The Rise of Gru. Given that Nintendo and Mario are ingrained in pop culture since the 80s, this should not come off as a surprise.
In a bonus round of news, the Super Mario Bros. movie has made bank in Japan since its official release on 27 April onward. The show garnered US$14.3 million in its opening weekend.
What’s even surprising? It’s a fun movie to watch that’s meant for all ages and fans of video games in general. Go check it out if you haven’t.
