Capcom Would ‘Gracefully Decline’ Microsoft Acquisition Offer
Capcom’s top brass is pretty clear on this: they’re not out hunting for new studios, and they’re definitely not up for grabs themselves. Capcom’s COO, Haruhito Tsujimoto, recently had a chat with Bloomberg, and they got right into the nitty-gritty of mergers and acquisitions.
Now, you might think that with all the buzz about buyouts in the gaming world, Capcom could be tempted to jump on the bandwagon. But nope, Tsujimoto had other ideas. He stated, “I think there have been many merger and acquisition talks in the game industry. There was once a time we were a target, but rather than acquiring an outside company, we prefer organic growth. It is important to train and develop human resources in-house in order to carry out growth strategies. I also believe we can utilise external partners, but we have no intention of acquiring companies.”
Basically, Capcom’s all about nurturing their own talent and letting it blossom. Tsujimoto even hinted that they’re open to teaming up with partners from the outside, but don’t even think about them swooping in to buy other companies.
Then came the big question: what if a titan like Microsoft wanted to make Capcom part of their gaming empire? Tsujimoto didn’t blink an eye. He said, “I would gracefully decline the offer. Because I believe it would be better if we were equal partners.”
Capcom’s been riding high lately, with their stock price reaching new heights and sales records breaking left and right. In the year ending 31 March 2023, they sold a jaw-dropping 41.7 million games, smashing their own record. And guess what? They’re gearing up to shatter that record again in the year ending 31 March 2024, with Street Fighter 6 and the Resident Evil 4 remake in the pipeline. Looks like they’re sticking to their guns and staying fiercely independent.
