Wipeout-Inspired Switch Game Cancelled Due To Unity Changes
By Lewis "lickety" Larcombe|September 26, 2023|0 Comment
Well, there’s some bad news for fans of the Wipeout-inspired racing game, BallisticNG. You know, the one that had Steam users singing its praises with “overwhelmingly positive” reviews? Yeah, they had plans to bring it to the Nintendo Switch, but those dreams just got derailed thanks to Unity’s recent policy changes.
So, here’s the scoop: Unity, the software development company behind the engine that powers many games, dropped a bombshell earlier this month. They decided that from now on, every time a game using their Unity engine gets installed, developers have to reach for their wallets.
They did try to make amends later with an apology and some backpedaling over the weekend, but the development community isn’t exactly thrilled with Unity’s new terms. Some folks are even muttering that it might mess up their future projects.
And now, it’s hitting home. The folks behind BallisticNG have officially pulled the plug on their Switch port, all thanks to this Unity drama. Neognosis, the developer, shared the unfortunate news in an update on the game’s Steam page.
Their reasoning? Well, Nintendo apparently demands that games meet certain Unity version requirements for release on the Switch. And guess what? BallisticNG was already two years behind the curve.
Two weeks ago, this might not have been a deal-breaker. Sure, there’d be some pain in updating the game to the new Unity version, but it’d be worth it in the long run, right? Wrong. Neognosis doesn’t have much faith that Unity won’t pull another fast one or revert to their original plans down the road.
So, due to all this uncertainty, they’re ditching their Switch plans. It’s a tough pill to swallow, especially since they put in years of work preparing BallisticNG for the Switch, all while keeping up with updates for the PC version.
They’re pretty bummed about it and don’t trust Unity enough to continue working with their tools in the foreseeable future. So, sadly, the Switch version is officially canceled.
They wrapped it up by expressing their regret and mentioning the possibility of working with a console (or maybe the rumored Switch 2) on a future project, one that won’t be tied down by Unity’s unpredictable changes. Tough break, but here’s hoping they find a smoother road ahead.
