Epic Games Buys Rocket League Developer Psyonix
Epic Games has announced that it has acquired Rocket League developer Psyonix. What does this mean for Rocket League? For starters, the multiplayer game will soon be available in the Epic Games Store, by late 2019.
However, Rocket League will still be supported for existing owners of the game on Steam (for now). According to Psyonix, the Epic Games acquisition also means that they will be able to “leverage their new relationship to grow the game in ways they couldn’t do on their own before”, as well as “significantly increase potential reach and resources” in esports.
To clarify, Epic Games has not confirmed whether it will remove the game from Steam or not. In a statement to Engadget, they said, “Long-term plans will be announced in the future.” Still, there’s a high probability of the game’s removal from Steam in the near future.
This will likely irritate PC gamers even more, especially considering that Epic Games is essentially pulling an existing game away from Steam. Previous exclusive announcements have mostly been new yet-to-be-released games, like Borderlands 3 and Phoenix Point.
