PSA: Epileptics Should Be Warned Ahead Of Cyberpunk 2077 Launch

A lot of recent modern games have improved leaps and bounds in terms of providing accessibility to gamers with disabilities. This includes colour-blind visual aids, easier difficulties, and more. However, the folks at CD Projekt Red must have overlooked one vital aspect of Cyberpunk 2077.

According to Game Informer’s Liana Ruppert, she suffered one major seizure and came close to experiencing several others in her playthrough of Cyberpunk 2077. Epileptics can be triggered by repeating blinking lights in rapid succession.

Ruppert mentions several parts of the game where epileptics should be careful of; including the following:

  • “A lot of red glitching animations” throughout the game.
  • When walking into clubs and bars.
  • When interacting with Keanu Reeves’ Johnny Silverhand, which will result in “a flickering pale blue glitch effect”.
  • During braindance sequences (a mechanic which allows players to interface with memories of dead characters and replay them).

According to Ruppert, the braindance sequence is particularly dangerous, as it was seemingly designed to emulate the experience of an epileptic episode.

Until CD Projekt Red adds an option to turn these rapid blinking lights off (or at least decrease their intensity), those prone to seizures and epilepsy should take caution.

I just hope this article will help prevent unwanted incidents from happening to unsuspecting gamers.

Cyberpunk 2077 is slated to release for the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, PC, and Google Stadia on 10 December 2020.

In the meantime, check out the latest PC specs for the game here, or head on over here for the contents of the game’s final Night City Wire live stream.
