[Report] Fallout 76 Is A Multiplayer Online Survival Game

So we’ve got a glimpse of Bethesda’s latest entry in the Fallout series: Fallout 76. Beyond that and a cover of that famous John Denver song playing in the background, we know squat about it.

At least until this Kotaku report popped up. Turns out Fallout 76 will be an online multiplayer survival game and will be heavily inspired by games like DayZ and Rust. We’ll break it down:

  • Originally prototyped as a multiplayer version of Fallout 4 with the goal of envisioning what an online Fallout game might look like, Fallout 76 has evolved quite a bit over the past few years, sources said.
  • The game will have quests and a story, like any other game from Bethesda Game Studios, a developer known for meaty RPGs like Skyrim. It will also feature base-building—just like 2015’s Fallout 4—and other survival-based and multiplayer mechanics, according to those sources.
  • One source from the Kotaku report cautioned that the gameplay is rapidly changing, like it does in many online “service” games, but that’s the core outline.
  • Lore-wise, the game takes place 20 years after the nuclear blast, meaning that Fallout 76’s world will be less populated and civilised as compared to Fallout 3 and Fallout 4 which takes place 200 years after.
  • The game is scheduled for an October release this year.

Guess we’ll have to wait until E3 to confirm all of this. Personally, this may be an extension of Fallout: New Vegas’ hardcore survival mode, so really, this is just the next step.
