Painkiller Returns After 20 Years—But Not Quite How You Remember It
By Lewis Larcombe|March 21, 2025|0 Comment
After 20 long years, Painkiller is back—and it’s angrier than ever. The cult-classic 2004 shooter, famous for launching players into a demon-slaying bloodbath, is making a grand return to PC and consoles. This time, developer Anshar, alongside publishers 3D Realms and Saber Interactive, is delivering a modern Painkiller experience that looks every bit as violent, over-the-top, and gleefully unhinged as we remember.
Revealed at the Future Games Show, the new Painkiller doesn’t seem to have lost its love for ludicrously destructive weaponry or sending players hurtling through hellish landscapes to mow down everything in sight. But now, you won’t have to face the hordes alone—co-op play is in, and it’s looking like absolute mayhem.
While the original Painkiller was a lonely, rage-fueled rampage through the underworld, this new iteration lets up to three players team up to bring righteous fury upon the legions of hell. Four playable heroes offer unique advantages, whether it’s extra firepower, a bigger health pool, or abilities that make demon-slaying even more of a spectacle.
And then there’s the arsenal. If you thought the stake gun was satisfying before, imagine combining it with attachments to make it even more absurdly deadly. Hookshot yourself across arenas, impale a demon mid-flight, then land in a fresh pit of nightmares ready for round two. This is Painkiller turned up to 11.
For the lone wolves, fear not—single-player is still an option. And just like in the original, tarot cards are back, providing game-changing buffs and fresh ways to send hell’s worst back where they came from.
Mark your calendars—Painkiller is set to unleash its fury in Fall 2025 on PC, Xbox Series X, and PS5. So, sharpen your stakes, stretch your trigger fingers, and get ready to turn demons into mincemeat. Hell’s about to have a really bad day.
