Dead Reckoning: Capcom Vancouver Studio Shuts Down

Here’s a big reason why there aren’t any news of a Dead Rising game as of late: because the main studio that develops them will be shutting down.

According to a Kotaku report, the reason for the shutdown and the early year layoffs prior to the announcement were Capcom’s decision. “[A]s a result of reviewing titles in development at Capcom Vancouver, Capcom has decided to cancel the development projects at this studio and will concentrate development of major titles in Japan.”

Here are more additional tidbits from this sad news:

  • 158 people will be losing their jobs due to the studio closure. However, a skeleton crew will remain until January of next year to finalize closure operations and logistics.
  • The last project the team is working on is the mobile version of Puzzle Fighter, which to be honest looks like a cheaply-made South Korean game.
  • Capcom Vancover were in charge of development for Dead Rising 2, Dead Rising 3, and Dead Rising 4. So far there is no word on the franchise’s future.
  • According to a source talking to Kotaku, a number of Capcom Vancouver employees went over to EA Vancouver in recent months following the inevitable shutdown.

Here’s what a Capcom representative had to say: “We appreciate the hard work and contributions of all the studio team members in creating unforgettable gameplay experiences for the Dead Rising series and Puzzle Fighter.”

All we can say is Frank West, we hardly knew you.
