On Board: Scrabble To Add 300 New Words Like “Sheeple”, “Twerk”, & “Facepalm”
I do love me some Scrabble sometimes when I need to flex my wordplay and wordsmithing abilities. So it’s with due diligence that I report the latest word additions in the official Merriam-Webster Scrabble Dictionary.
According to AP, there will be:
- short words like “OK” and “ew”. According to lexicographer Peter Sokolowski & Merriam-Webster Scrabble Dictionary editor at large, players have been waiting for the “OK” addition for a long time.
Basically two- and three-letter words are the lifeblood of the game.
- 20 words that start with Q and no U next to it like “Qapik”, a monetary unit of Azerbaijan, equal to 1/100 of the Azerbaijani manat. “Every time there’s a word with q and no u,” said Peter, “it’s a big deal. Most of these are obscure.”
- esoteric culinary dishes getting the spotlight. We now get to play words like “bibimbap”, “sriracha”, and “arancini”.
- new-age terms like “bizjet” and even some well-known words like “zen”.
- choice internet/pop-culture words. These include “aquafaba”, “sheeple”, “wayback”, “emoji”, “facepalm”, “hivemind”, and “twerk”.
