Here’s Why You Should Reconsider Buying The PS5

I’m sure a lot of gamers out there are already saving money and preparing for the imminent arrival of Sony’s next-gen successor to the PS4, which may or may not be called the PS5. With all signs pointing to a likely holiday 2020 release date/window, we don’t have long until the PS5 comes along.

However, perhaps you folks should reconsider buying the PS5 and just stick with the PS4 for now. Here’s why:

According to the Wall Street Journal (via GamesIndustry.biz), Sony chief executive Kenichiro Yoshida recently described the PS5 as a “niche product aimed at hardcore players” during a company strategy briefing.

What this means is that Sony’s next-gen console will prioritize high-quality AAA exclusives with Ultra-HD 4K-resolution from internal studios (first-party developers like Sony Santa Monica, Naughty Dog, and more) and large publishers like Ubisoft, EA, and others.

The company will no longer be targeting smaller developers and indie titles due to limited resources. This strategy can already be seen being implemented at this year’s Tokyo Game Show 2019, as Sony won’t be showcasing any indie titles at all, unlike previous years.

Sony officials are said to believe that gamers will buy the PS5 for its high-quality exclusives rather than smaller indie games already available on other platforms like PC and Nintendo Switch.

However, they also believe that indie devs will still release their games on the PS5, despite the lack of support from Sony. This is because the projected popularity of the PS5 will mean that they can’t afford to miss out on such a key market of the games industry.

The sources claim that Sony will still be concentrating on Microsoft as its main rivals while rising streaming services like Google Stadia will remain regarded as only a medium-to-high potential threat in the near future.

PS4 sales figures are nearing 100 million units worldwide, and that means Sony is clearly enjoying a strong headstart for the next gaming generation. Early adopters (those who buy the consoles at launch) are usually hardcore gamers anyways, so the company’s strategy is a sound one.

There are plenty of gamers out there who just play casual mainstream games like FIFA and Call Of Duty or mindless battle royale titles like Fortnite and Apex Legends. With the PS5 aiming for hardcore gamers from the outset, maybe you folks would be better off remaining on the PS4 or just play mobile games on your smartphones.
