PlayStation 4 Is Now The Fastest Console To Ship 100 Million Units
By Alleef Ashaari|July 30, 2019|1 Comment
Sony’s PlayStation 4 home console has broken many records but now it’s starting to cement itself as one of history’s best-selling consoles. As of 30 June 2019, the PS4 has shipped more than 100 million units worldwide, and that includes a total of 3.2 million between April and June alone.
This breaks the record previously held by the PS2 and Nintendo Wii. It took the PS4 only five years and two months to reach the 100 million shipments milestone. In comparison, the PS2 took five years and seven months to achieve the same amount.
However, it remains to be seen if the PS4 will ultimately ship or sell enough units to overtake the PS2’s total lifetime sales of a whopping 155 million units. With the PS5 rumored to launch sometime in holiday 2020, the PS4 will have just a little bit over a year to do that.

Another fun fact provided by games industry analyst Daniel Ahmad reveals that digital game downloads (or sales) have exceeded 50 percent. What this means is that 53 percent of all PS4 games sold in the second quarter of 2019 were digital copies.
This is incredible news for advocates of digital gaming. It also means that more and more gamers are opting for digital games rather than physical, which is an ongoing trend that’s likely to continue increasing in the near future thanks to increasingly better Internet speeds and infrastructure.
A look at network sales for Sony’s PlayStation division.

In the meantime, head on over here to find out why we think that gamers should think twice before buying the PS5 when it eventually releases (as well as more details about the next-gen console being revealed).
