Borderlands 3 Is Getting Mayhem 2.0; Here’s How It Works
Starting 23rd April, it’s time for you to start farming for new weapons again. Gearbox is shaking up Borderlands 3’s difficulty mode with Mayhem Mode 2.0. Unlike the original Mayhem mode which offers four levels with a ton of modifiers (enemies take less elemental damage, you take more, etc.), the updates aim to “offer a more varied, lasting, and rewarding challenge”.
From the looks of it, this is sounding more like part 3’s version of OP mode. Here are the noteworthy changes you should keep track of.
You Can Now Toggle It On Your ECHO Device
No need to go back to Sanctuary and toggle the Mayhem Mode totem thingy. You now can adjust it on your ECHO Device anytime, anywhere. Note that in multiplayer games the Mayhem level will be determined by the host, and when you matchmake for multiplayer, you’ll automatically be matched with players who are at a similar Mayhem level as you whenever possible.
There Are 25 New Modifiers To Help/Hinder You
There will be more than 25 all-new modifiers that you can apply to your game. Each of them are rated as Easy, Medium, Hard, or Very Hard. Some examples include:
- Easy: Big Kick Energy. Increases weapon damage but also increases recoil and spread.
- Easy: Galaxy Brain. Dramatically increases enemy heads so that critical shots are easier to land.
- Medium: Floor is Lava. A pool of damage-dealing lava will periodically form below you when you are standing still.
- Hard: Drone Ranger. Healing Drones spawn on the map, assisting enemies on the fly.
More will be revealed later this week.
Modifiers Are Selected At Random
Having said that, the number of modifiers and difficulty ratings are always the same for each Mayhem level. Check out the table below.
| Mayhem Level | Modifier 1 | Modifier 2 | Modifier 3 | Modifier 4 |
| 1 | EASY | |||
| 2 | EASY | MEDIUM | ||
| 3 | EASY | MEDIUM | MEDIUM | |
| 4 | EASY | HARD | ||
| 5 | EASY | MEDIUM | HARD | |
| 6 | EASY | MEDIUM | MEDIUM | HARD |
| 7 | EASY | HARD | HARD | |
| 8 | EASY | VERY HARD | ||
| 9 | EASY | MEDIUM | VERY HARD | |
| 10 | EASY | MEDIUM | HARD | VERY HARD |
Higher Mayhem Levels Equal Better Loot
The quality of the weapons dropped by enemies will improve as you work your way up through the Mayhem levels. For example, a Cutsman submachine gun that drops in Mayhem level 2 will be more powerful than one that drops in Mayhem level 1. Given that enemies’ health, shield, and armour stats increase with each Mayhem level, the damage boost that you get from weapons in one Mayhem level will help you to prepare for the next.
There are also eight new Legendary weapons that you can get from certain bosses only when playing at Mayhem level 6 or higher. The Sand Hawk, for example, is a Legendary automatic sniper rifle that fires a line of nine bullets that move to mimic the way that a hawk flaps its wings.

Look forward to seeing Borderlands 3 players break Mayhem 2.0 with custom builds and whatnot. This weekend’s looking mighty packed for loot-and-shoot superfans!
