Assassin’s Creed Movie Writer To Helm New Battlestar Galactica Series

Fans rejoiced when they found out that Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail will be the executive producer of the new exclusive Battlestar Galactica series for NBC’s Peacock streaming service. However, the latest news might not elicit the same positive reaction.
According to Deadline, Michael Lesslie will be responsible for creating, writing and executive producing Peacock’s new Battlestar Galactica series. Unfortunately, he is best known for writing 2016’s widely-derided Assassin’s Creed movie starring Michael Fassbender.
While that might not bode well for the upcoming series, Esmail has previously clarified that the new Battlestar Galactica series won’t be a remake or reboot, but will instead be a new story within the established canon of the franchise’s universe.
In other words, it will likely be a sequel or prequel of some sort, just like the Caprica spinoff series in 2010 (which was cancelled after just one season). It could also be possible that Esmail will explore what’s happening in other parts of the galaxy set concurrently with the events of the 2004 series.
Originally running from 2004 to 2009, the 2004 Battlestar Galactica series by Ronald D. Moore is itself a reboot of the original 1978 Battlestar Galactica by Glen A. Larson. It starred the likes of Edward James Olmos, Mary McDonnell, Katee Sackhoff, Jamie Bamber, James Callis, Tricia Helfer, and Grace Park.
It followed the remnants of humanity escaping from the android race called the Cylons after losing the war. The Battlestar Galactica is the only remaining military ship in the Colonial Fleet, which is where the name of the series is derived from.
In an official statement, Lesslie said:
“I am beyond excited to be taking on this iconic and inspirational show.
As a lifelong devotee, I know that the possibilities of Battlestar Galactica’s world are infinite and that each iteration has raised the bar for epic and intelligent sci-fi storytelling.
The teams at Esmail Corp, UCP and Peacock are second to none, and I already know that we are going to honour Glen A Larson and Ronald D Moore’s landmark series and break new boundaries with our own vision.
It’s a dream come true – one I just can’t wait to share with fans, new and old alike. So say we all.â€
