This Dell G5 Laptop Is The First To Feature AMD’s SmartShift Tech
By Alleef Ashaari|May 27, 2020|0 Comment
During its AMD RYZEN 4000 Series Consumer Virtual Launch 2020 live stream earlier today, the company revealed more about its new AMD SmartShift technology, which will be featured on future laptops, starting with the recent Dell G5 15 SE. What’s interesting is that the upcoming next-gen Sony PlayStation 5 will also be utilizing AMD SmartShift to a certain unspecified extent.
What is AMD SmartShift?
AMD’s SmartShift technology essentially allows the dynamic shifting of power and performance between the CPU and GPU in real-time. This will enable them to share the intensive workload, thereby increasing performance up to 14 percent. The process will be fully automated and doesn’t require additional software.
However, AMD SmartShift requires a laptop to have both an AMD Ryzen CPU and a discrete AMD GPU, which are rare. The new Dell G5 15 SE is the only confirmed laptop to feature the new AMD SmartShift technology at the time of writing.
The Dell G5 15 SE is priced over US$800+ (which would realistically be around RM4000+). It features an AMD Ryzen 5 4600H processor, AMD Radeon RX 5600M discrete graphics, 8GB of RAM and a 256GB M.2 PCIe SSD. Meanwhile, the top-end US$1200+ (or RM5200+) model has a Ryzen 7 4800H, Radeon RX 5600M, 16GB of RAM and a 1TB SSD.
