Nintendo Switch China Sales Reach Major Milestone

Nintendo and Tencent have announced that they have shipped more than one million Nintendo Switch consoles in China. This is about a year and more after the hybrid console officially launched in China back in December 2019, about two years later than the rest of the world.

According to Niko Partners analyst Daniel Ahmad (via Reuters), these official figures suggest that the sales of the Nintendo Switch are larger than the combined sales of the PS4 and Xbox One within the same timeframe. While early sales of the Nintendo Switch were slow, they began to increase exponentially following the release of Ring Fit Adventure in China.

This is good news for the console gaming industry in China, where mobile and PC gaming reign supreme. The feat is even more impressive considering that the Nintendo Switch’s official game offerings in China are limited. Plus, millions of other gamers in the country have already obtained one via the black/grey market in the two-year span of time between its original launch in 2017 and its official Chinese launch in 2019.

Based on forecasts made by Niko Partners, China’s console market revenue will reach a whopping US$2.15 billion in 2024, which will be double that of 2019. This can be attributed to the success of Switch and the launches of the next-generation consoles like the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
