Avatar The Last Airbender Is Getting A New Animated Movie & Spinoffs

Nickelodeon has announced that the Avatar The Last Airbender, or Avatar The Legend Of Aang, franchise and universe is officially expanding with a newly formed content division called Avatar Studios designed to create original animated series and movies. The first project under the studio banner is an original animated theatrical film, which is set to begin production this year.

The content will debut on platforms including Paramount Plus, on Nickelodeon’s own linear and digital platforms and on third-party platforms and in cinemas. Original creators and executive producers Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko have signed on to serve as co-chief creative officers of Avatar Studios, reporting to Ramsey Naito, president of Nickelodeon Animation.

Avatar The Last Airbender originally aired for three seasons on Nickelodeon from February 2005 to July 2008. The sequel series Legend Of Korra aired for four seasons from April 2012 to December 2014.

However, according to sources from Variety, the upcoming Avatar Netflix series is completely independent of the new Avatar Studios deal and that the live-action series is still moving forward at the streaming platform. However, original creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko are no longer working on Netflix’s live-action adaptation of the iconic animated series.
